Nowadays online shopping becomes more popular than in-store shopping. Is it a positive or a negative development? Give your reasons and examples.
Now that we can buy just about anything with a few mouse clicks from the comfort of our home, very few people actually feel the need to venture into brick and mortar stores. There is no denying the fact that online shopping has become more popular than in-store shopping. This trend has both positive and negative aspects.
The huge popularity of online shopping can be attributed to the fact that it makes shopping easier. It saves both time and money. Buyers no longer have to drive all the way to shops to buy things. Also, online stores tend to offer attractive prices probably because they have lower overhead costs. This allows them to sell items for deeply discounted prices. This can lead to major cost benefits for shoppers. In addition, online shopping makes it easy to buy things from any part of the world. Even if an item is not available in your country, you can buy it from online stores. Online shopping also allows you to compare prices before hitting the purchase button.
On the flip side, the ease of online shopping has made many people compulsive shoppers. Most of us spend lots of time on the internet every day. And while we are on the internet, we get bombarded with numerous advertisements. For a compulsive shopper, this is a good reason to splurge. The fact that online shopping encourages us to buy things that we do not need or use cannot be denied. This can lead to debts. Also, there are security concerns. When you buy things online, you run a small risk of getting your financial information exploited by hackers. Of course, good anti-virus and anti-malware programs can offer a great deal of protection. But almost every week, we hear about data breaches at major online retailers.
To conclude, online shopping has several advantages and disadvantages. However, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Of course, the shopper has to exercise some common sense and keep their device free of malware if they want to enjoy the benefits of online shopping.

Compare and Contrast Essay: Online Shopping vs. In-Store Shopping
- Length: 576 words (1.6 double-spaced pages)
- Rating: Excellent
Online and in-store shopping differentiates in various ways. However, they both are convenient ways to shop. Recently, online shopping has been most convenient for me, but I enjoy both ways of shopping. I believe that shopping preferences change depending on a person’s situation. I noticed that many people are starting to prefer online shopping more than in-store shopping.
Online shopping is most convenient for individuals that don’t have time to go to the store. If you’re busy with an online job or online classes then online shopping can sometimes be more convenient. It’s also convenient since you don’t have to drive, catch the bus, wait in a long line, or deal with not being able to find an item. All you have to do is type in the item you’re looking for and it’s there. Once you find the item, you can order it at anytime because online stores never close.
Lately, I’ve been having a lot online shopping experiences. I usually buy from websites with a huge variety of sellers to be sure that I get the best price. When you’re looking for the best price, it requires research. The best price is more often found online, but not always. Online merchants will sometimes sell you an item for double the retail price. When the price isn’t doubled, it may be the same price plus shipping costs. Therefore, you still won’t have the best price. This item could possibly be on sale in retail stores.
In-store shopping can be most convenient for those who are rarely at home and don’t have time to compare prices. It’s especially convenient for those who work outside of home and students on campus. In-store shopping can also be a lot quicker since you don’t have to worry about shipping. All you have to do is grab the item you want, step in line, and buy it. I’ve had many experiences when I never received the item. When an item is coming from the United States, it should never take over two months to finally receive it.
I believe that some online stores can be really dishonest. I haven’t had nearly as many disappointments from in-store purchases as I did from online purchases. I’ve had the most disappointments with shipping. I’ve had experiences with sellers taking extremely long to finally ship an item. There were times when I never even received the item I ordered.

I’ve also received broken items, the wrong item, and items that weren’t as described. In the store you can actually see the item, but you have to trust a picture when shopping online. Many sellers would zoom in for the item a lot, so the item has a chance at being smaller when you see it.
When shopping for clothing, in-store shopping is definitely a better option. The main reason is because you get to try on clothes. If it’s a store that doesn’t have fitting rooms, you can still view it clearly and place it against you. You can’t do this at all with online shopping. You will just have to trust the size and measurements. At times, I received items with completely different measurements than they described.
Whenever I make online purchases, it’s usually because of the price. I’m really into international things, so I really like that I can shop worldwide with online shopping. Although, I’ve had my share of negative experiences, I won’t let that stop me from making further online purchases. Online shopping and in-store shopping are both great ways to shop. I love shopping and I am always willing to explore various shopping options.
